It was a country wedding. And in the church all solemn as the vicar blessed the wedding
It was a country wedding. And in the church all solemn as the vicar blessed the wedding cake and wine. But once the wedding ceremony was over the vicar the Rev. Jack Putterell changed from his clerical robes. He now put on a gaily coloured jerkin and a staw hat decorated with colourful ribbons the clothes of a morris dancer. Then with bells tied round his shins he danced. The vicar watched by nearly everyone in the Essex village of Thaxted was dancing a traditional dance to celebrate the wedding of Ida Harvey and Mike Smith. Mike is also a Morris Dancer later danced with his bride a the vicar looked on. Our Picture Shows: The wedding ceremony over, the Vicar (third from right) takes part in the traditional Morris Dances. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to a charming country wedding in the summer of 1957. The scene unfolds within the walls of a quaint church in Thaxted, Essex. As the ceremony concludes and blessings are bestowed upon the newlyweds' cake and wine, an unexpected transformation takes place. The Reverend Jack Putterell sheds his solemn clerical robes for a vibrant gaily colored jerkin and a straw hat adorned with ribbons. With bells tied around his shins, he becomes one with the ancient tradition of Morris dancing. All eyes in the village are fixed upon him as he gracefully moves to celebrate Ida Harvey and Mike Smith's union. As if scripted by fate itself, Mike himself is also a Morris dancer. Joined by his radiant bride, they take center stage alongside their reverent vicar-turned-dancer. The air fills with lively music from fiddlers while handkerchiefs flutter through the air like joyful confetti. This snapshot captures not only a momentous occasion but also showcases how deeply rooted customs can intertwine with personal celebrations. It serves as a reminder that even those who guide us spiritually have passions beyond their sacred duties. Preserved through time on this vintage photograph, it immortalizes an enchanting day when love united hearts and traditions danced harmoniously together under the watchful eye of an extraordinary vicar.
