WW1 - Captain Hawker takes on three Germans in the air

WW1 - Captain Lanoe George Hawker VC, DSO (1890-1916), was a British flying ace, with seven credited victories. This illustration captures an occassion on 25th July 1915, where Captain Hawker is in an unequal aerial battle with three German aeroplanes. Each German aeroplane is manned by a pilot and an observer, and armed with machine-guns. The first plane escapes, the second bursts into flames as it decends, and the third continues to attack, but is eventually driven down into the ground in British lines. Captain Hawker was rewarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry that a British and Commonwealth serviceman can achieve. Date: 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the bravery and skill of Captain Lanoe George Hawker VC, DSO during an unequal aerial battle against three German aeroplanes on the fateful day of July 25, 1915, during the First World War. Each German aircraft, manned by a pilot and an observer, was armed with deadly machine-guns, presenting a formidable challenge to the British flying ace. With only one plane at his disposal, Hawker engaged the enemy in the vast expanse of the war-torn sky. In this thrilling encounter, the first German plane managed to escape, but the second was not so fortunate. Its fuselage burst into flames as it descended, leaving the crew with no choice but to abandon their doomed aircraft. The third German plane continued its relentless attack, but Hawker's determination and prowess ultimately drove it down into the British lines. This daring feat earned Hawker the highest award for gallantry that a British and Commonwealth serviceman can achieve - the Victoria Cross. The print serves as a poignant reminder of the heroism and sacrifice displayed by pilots during the Great War.
