Visit to Madeira - Road to the Hotel
Black and white lantern slide of a sledge/carriage (carro de bois) being pulled up a hill by a pair of oxen - Visit to Madeira. Part of Box 125 - Madeira. Boswell Collection. In 1848 Major Buckley invented the bullock cart (carro de bois), a sled with a canopy and basket chairs, pulled by strong young oxen. The sled runners went more easily over Funchals sharp cobbles than did wheels. The bullock carts were banned in the 1980s because they held up traffic. Date: circa 1890s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lantern slide depicts a traditional carro de bois, or bullock cart, making its way up a steep hill in Madeira, Portugal during the late 1890s. The oxen, with their powerful muscles straining, pull the sledge with ease over the sharp cobblestones, which were notoriously difficult for wheeled vehicles. The invention of the carro de bois in 1848 by Major Buckley revolutionized transportation on the island, providing a more comfortable and efficient means of travel than the previous methods. The sled features a canopy and basket chairs, offering passengers a respite from the sun and a chance to enjoy the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the lush greenery that Madeira is famous for. However, as the 20th century approached, the bullock carts were eventually banned in the 1980s due to their traffic congestion and the increasing popularity of motorized vehicles. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when travel in Madeira was a more leisurely and rustic experience.
