2002 Bishop Capt Cunningham Honfraes

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken in 1917, we see R E Bishop (right) and Group Captain John Cunningham, CBE, DSO**, DFC*, HonFRAeS (second right) standing next to a military transport aircraft. Both men were prominent figures in the early history of aviation, with significant contributions to the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force. R E Bishop, whose full name is not known, served as an engineer in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. He is best known for his work on the development and production of the Airco DH.4, a successful bomber and fighter aircraft that saw extensive use by the British military. Group Captain John Cunningham, on the other hand, was a decorated military pilot and flying ace. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) twice, the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) twice, and the Croix de Guerre among other honors. Cunningham flew various types of aircraft during the war, including the Sopwith Camel and the SE5a. After the war, he continued to serve in the RAF and rose to the rank of Group Captain. The photograph shows the two men in front of a military transport aircraft, likely used for moving troops and supplies to the front lines. The image captures a moment in history when aviation was still a new and exciting technology, and these men were at the forefront of its development and use in military applications. Both R E Bishop and Group Captain John Cunningham made significant contributions to the history of aviation, and this photograph is a testament to their important work during a time of great change and innovation. The image is a valuable historical record and a reminder of the pioneering spirit that drove the development of aviation technology in the early 20th century.
