EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this image of the Rowton House dining room at Vauxhall, South London, circa 1895. The Rowton Houses, a series of six large, low-cost accommodations for working men, were the brainchild of Montagu William Lowry Corry, better known as Lord Rowton. This particular establishment, located on Bond Street (now Bondway), was the first to open its doors in 1892. The photograph showcases the dining room, where men would gather to enjoy their meals. The room is adorned with ornate woodwork, intricate wallpaper, and an impressive fireplace, creating an inviting and homely atmosphere. The long wooden table, laden with plates and cutlery, suggests a communal dining experience, fostering camaraderie and a sense of community among the residents. Despite the grandeur of the dining room, it's essential to remember that the Rowton Houses were not luxury accommodations. They were designed to provide affordable housing for working men, many of whom would have otherwise been forced to sleep in doss-houses or on the streets. Lord Rowton's vision was to offer a clean, safe, and affordable alternative, making a significant impact on the lives of countless Londoners during the late 19th century. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the history and social context of the Rowton Houses, which continue to be an intriguing part of London's rich history.
