EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 33: Rastrelliger kanagurta, or the Indian Mackerel, is depicted in this stunning Victorian-era illustration by Louis-Isidore Duperrey from his Zoologie Atlas, published in 1826 following his voyage on the Coquille from 1822 to 1825. The Indian Mackerel is a bony fish belonging to the Scombridae family, which also includes tuna and bonito. This ray-finned fish is characterized by its elongated, forked body, blue-green back, and prominent stripes that run down its sides. The fish in this illustration is shown in a dynamic pose, with its back arched and its powerful tail propelling it forward through the water. Duperrey's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate depiction of the fish's scales, gills, and fins. The Indian Mackerel is a highly prized food fish in many parts of the Indian Ocean, and its image would have been familiar to many people in the 19th century. This illustration is a testament to the rich natural history knowledge that was being discovered and documented during the Victorian era. Duperrey's work was part of a larger movement to document and classify the natural world, and his contributions to the field of ichthyology (the study of fish) were significant. Today, the Indian Mackerel remains an important species in both commercial and recreational fisheries, and its image continues to inspire artists and naturalists alike.
