EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait captures the elegance and grace of Princess Ena of Battenberg (1887-1969), who would later become Queen Consort of Spain as the wife of King Alfonso XIII (1886-1941). The photograph, taken circa 1905, showcases the young princess in her regal beauty, with a serene expression and an air of refinement. Born Princess Victoria Eugenie Julia Ena of Battenberg on February 24, 1887, in London, England, Ena was a member of the British royal family through her mother, Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Her father, Prince Henry of Battenberg, was a German prince. Ena's multinational heritage and her conversion to Catholicism made her an intriguing and controversial figure in British society. In 1906, Ena married King Alfonso XIII of Spain, who was 17 years her senior. The wedding took place in Madrid, Spain, and Ena became the Queen Consort of Spain. The couple had four children together: Infanta Beatriz, Infanta Alfonso, Infanta Maria Cristina, and Infante Jaime. Ena's reign as Queen of Spain was marked by her dedication to charity work and her support of the arts. She was also known for her fashion sense and her love of horses. However, her marriage to Alfonso was not without its challenges, and the couple eventually separated in 1931. Ena returned to the UK and lived out the rest of her days in exile. This portrait captures a moment in time when Ena was still a young and vibrant princess, full of promise and potential, on the cusp of her royal duties as the Queen Consort of Spain. The photograph is a testament to her beauty, elegance, and the intrigue that surrounded her as a member of the British royal family marrying into Spanish royalty.
