EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite postcard, hailing from Northern Ireland and bearing the distinct mark of Walton of Belfast, captures a remarkable moment in maritime history. The image showcases the iconic RMS Olympic, the sister ship to the illustrious Titanic, undergoing construction at Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast. The photograph, estimated to have been taken between 1910 and 1911, depicts a floating crane, an engineering marvel of its time, lifting the aftermost fourth funnel into the Olympic's hull. The crane, an impressive feat of German engineering, was designed by the renowned Bertha Krupp, namesake of the infamous Big Bertha gun used during World War I. This colossal crane was manufactured by Benrather Maschinenfabrik in Germany and boasted a lifting capacity of 150 tons and a height of 149 feet. The RMS Olympic, a symbol of luxury and opulence, was the largest and most expensive ship in the world at the time of its launch. This postcard offers a rare glimpse into the intricacies of shipbuilding during the early 20th century, providing a fascinating window into the past. The postcard's provenance is further enhanced by the fact that it was posted much later, making it a cherished keepsake for collectors and historians alike. This postcard, offered by Henry Aldridge & Son Ltd. from Mary Evans Prints Online, is not only a testament to the rich maritime heritage of Northern Ireland but also a reminder of the ingenuity and innovation that shaped the world of transportation during this era.
