The Judgment of Paris: A Mythological Tale of Desire and Deception (circa 1901) This illustration depicts the pivotal moment of the Greek mythological story, The Judgment of Paris. The scene represents the goddess of Discord, Eris, holding the infamous golden apple, which she vengefully threw into the wedding feast of Peleus and Thetis. The apple, inscribed with the message "to the fairest one," instigated a series of events that would ultimately lead to the infamous Trojan War. Eris, who was not invited to the wedding, sought revenge against the gods for her exclusion. She threw the apple into the gathering, and the three most beautiful goddesses – Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena – eagerly claimed it as theirs. Paris, the unsuspecting prince, was tasked with deciding which goddess was the fairest. Each goddess promised enticing rewards: Aphrodite offered him the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Troy; Hera promised power and rule over Europe; and Athena offered wisdom and glory. Paris, swayed by Aphrodite's allure, chose her as the fairest, setting in motion a chain reaction of events that would change the course of history. This exquisite illustration, from the March of the Women Collection, is a testament to the timeless allure of Greek mythology. Created circa 1901 by the renowned French caricaturists Les Maitres de la Caricature, this illustration showcases their masterful use of line, form, and color to bring the myth to life. The intricate details of the goddesses' expressions, clothing, and accessories reveal the depth of their desires and the consequences of their actions. This image is a must-have for any collection of Greek mythology or mythological art.
