EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking studio portrait captures Frederic Weatherly, a prominent figure in late Victorian England, in his dual roles as a barrister and a prolific songwriter. Born on October 4, 1848, Weatherly pursued a successful career in law, becoming a King's Counsel (KC) in 1894. However, his passion for music and poetry led him to write lyrics for over 1,000 songs, many of which were set to popular tunes and became beloved classics. Weatherly's image here, taken in 1895, shows him in the full regalia of a barrister, including the traditional wig and gown. The stern expression on his face conveys the seriousness and authority that came with his legal profession. Yet, beneath the formal exterior, Weatherly harbored a deep love for the arts and a gift for crafting poignant and enduring lyrics. As a lyricist, Weatherly collaborated with prominent composers such as John Farnon, Paul Rubens, and Sidney Jones. Some of his most famous works include "Danny Boy," "Love's Old Sweet Song," and "The Long, Long Trail." In addition to his writing, Weatherly also ventured into broadcasting, delivering talks on the BBC in the 1920s. This photograph serves as a testament to Weatherly's multifaceted talents and his significant contributions to both the legal and artistic worlds during the late 19th century. The image, taken from the Illustrated London News Archive held by Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable man who defied the conventions of his time and left an indelible mark on popular culture.
