EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Alexander William George Duff, the 6th Earl and 1st Duke of Fife (1849-1912), a prominent figure in British royalty during the late Victorian era. Born on March 14, 1849, Duff was the eldest son of James Duff, 5th Earl of Fife, and Lady Elizabeth Scott-Erskine. He would later marry Princess Louise Victoria, the eldest daughter of King Edward VII, in 1889. The Duke of Fife was known for his distinctive ginger hair, which sets him apart in this formal portrait. He served as a Grenadier Guards officer and was a skilled horseman, becoming a colonel in the Royal Scots Greys. In 1886, he was made a Knight of the Thistle, an order of chivalry established by James V of Scotland. In 1892, Duff was created the 1st Duke of Fife and Earl of Macduff, elevating him to the highest rank in the Scottish peerage. This title was a testament to his significant contributions to Scottish society and his close relationship with the royal family. The Duke of Fife and Princess Louise Victoria had three children: Princess Alexandra of Wales, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, and Princess Maud of Wales. Tragically, their eldest son, Albert Victor, died unexpectedly in 1892, making his younger brother, George, the heir to the throne. The Duke of Fife passed away on January 26, 1912, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a devoted husband, a loving father, and a prominent figure in British royalty. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of his life and the era in which he lived.
