EDITORS COMMENTS
This wood engraving depicts the enigmatic and extinct bird species, the dodo (Raphus cucullatus), as illustrated by the Dutch naturalist and physician, Willem Piso (1611-1678), in his seminal work "Historia Naturalis Avium" published in Amsterdam in 1658. Piso's meticulous observation and documentation of the dodo, which was then a relatively new discovery to Europeans, significantly contributed to the early understanding of this unique and intriguing bird. The dodo, a native of the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, was characterized by its large size, flightless wings, and distinctive appearance, including its round body, large head, and red eyes. This particular illustration, hand-colored and taken from the 1848 edition of "The Dodo and its Kindred" by Hugh Edwin Strickland and Alexander Gordon Melville, showcases Piso's remarkable attention to detail and accuracy. The dodo's extinction remains a subject of ongoing debate among scientists, with theories suggesting that human activity, such as hunting and habitat destruction, played a significant role in its demise. Despite this tragic end, the dodo continues to fascinate and inspire ornithologists, natural historians, and the public alike, serving as a reminder of the natural world's wonders and the importance of preserving and protecting endangered species.
