EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases three fascinating marine species: the Stellate rabbitfish (Siganus stellatus), Parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense), and Palecheek parrotfish (Chlorurus japanensis). The engraving is based on an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, as featured in the Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans by Bernard Germain de Lacepede, published by Eymery in Paris in 1825. The Stellate rabbitfish, also known as the scare rabbitfish or etoile rabbitfish, is a vibrant, striped fish native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its distinctive coloration serves as excellent camouflage among the coral reefs, allowing it to blend in and avoid potential predators. The Parrotfish, or kakatoe, is easily recognizable by its large, beak-like mouth, which it uses to crush and grind coral and algae. This important herbivore plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the coral reef ecosystem. The Palecheek parrotfish, or vert parrotfish, is characterized by its pale, almost white, cheeks and body. This species is found in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, and is an important food source for many larger marine organisms. This stunning engraving, produced by David, offers a captivating glimpse into the rich marine biodiversity of the past, and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting these beautiful and essential creatures in our oceans today.
