EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Miss Sylvia Storey, formerly a renowned stage star, is seen in an elegant pose after the announcement of her engagement to Major Percy Hansen. The image captures the excitement and anticipation of the betrothal, which took place in December 1921. Sylvia Storey, born into humble circumstances, had risen to prominence in the theatre world and had even married into the aristocracy when she wed the seventh Earl Poulett in 1908. The union produced two children, but tragically, the Earl died in 1918 due to the Spanish influenza epidemic. However, the prospective marriage between Sylvia Storey and Major Hansen never came to fruition. It is believed that the financial benefits Sylvia received as a widow, including an allowance from her late husband's estate, depended on her remaining unmarried. Thus, the engagement to Major Hansen may have been called off, leaving Sylvia to navigate the complexities of society and her own financial future. Despite the challenges, Sylvia Storey continued to captivate audiences with her acting talents, gracing the stages of London's West End and beyond. Her story serves as a reminder of the intricacies of the aristocracy and the personal sacrifices that sometimes come with wealth and status. This photograph, taken in the early 1920s, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the poise and elegance of Sylvia Storey as she navigated the complexities of love, marriage, and society.
