EDITORS COMMENTS
Herald of Swabia, or Herold der Schwabische, is depicted in this beautiful chromolithograph from Otto Watzelberger's "Contributions to the Vocabulary of Heraldry," published by Theodor Ackermann in Munich in 1900. The herald wears an impressive armorial tunic in the colors of Swabia, featuring gold and black lozenges. He proudly holds an escutcheon in the heraldic tincture of gules, or red, bearing the symbol of Swabia's arms: three lions passant, or, that is, lions walking and facing forward. Otto Watzelberger (1848-1920) was a renowned heraldist and genealogist, serving as Secretary of the Koeniglich Bayerischen Haus-Ritter-Ordens vom heiligen Georg, or Royal Bavarian House Equestrian Order of Saint George. This order, founded in 1472, was a chivalric and honorary order of the Duchy of Bavaria, and its members were entitled to use the arms of Swabia as part of their personal coats of arms. This stunning chromolithograph, which showcases the intricacies of Swabian heraldry, is a testament to Watzelberger's dedication to the study and preservation of heraldic traditions. The vibrant colors and meticulous details bring the herald and his arms to life, making this an essential addition to any collection of heraldic art or historical prints.
