EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts a French man in full court attire, standing before the grandeur of the Palace of Justice in Paris during the reign of King Louis XVI, circa 1788. The man, dressed in the height of 18th-century fashion, dons an elegant and intricately designed suit known as a "culotte de cour" or "habit de cour" (court suit). The double-breasted jacket, fastened with large silver buttons, is adorned with elaborate gold braid and velvet trim. A white cravat, carefully tied and secured with a brooch, completes the elegant ensemble. The man's posture conveys a sense of pride and importance, reflecting the prestige and social hierarchy of the Ancien Régime's court. The detailed rendering of the court scene, with its ornate decorations, gilded furnishings, and attentive courtiers, underscores the grandeur and opulence of the era. This image is taken from "Costumes Historiques de la France," a comprehensive collection of historical costumes published by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, in 1852. The Administration de Librairie in Paris oversaw the production of this exquisite series, which aimed to preserve and document the rich and diverse history of French fashion. The meticulous attention to detail in this lithograph, as well as the others in the collection, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of 18th-century French court life and the intricate social codes that governed it.
