EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph captures the essence of an Edwardian Fancy Dress Ball held at the prestigious Princes Skating Club in Knightsbridge, London, in January 1901. The elegant and stylish attendees donned elaborate costumes that reflected the spirit of the occasion, transporting themselves to far-off lands and fantastical realms. From left to right, we see Violet Cuninghame dressed as Folly, her whimsical costume a delightful contrast to the formal setting. Myra Hamilton, in the Pierrette costume, took home the third prize of the evening. May Lyle, with her intricate Geisha attire, added an exotic touch to the event. Miss Nevill, in her Swiss costume, exuded a rustic charm, while Miss Goldsworthy's Wedgwood ensemble was a testament to the refined taste of the era. The young Master Curtis brought joy to the crowd as he skated around in his Clown costume, earning him plenty of laughter and applause. Miss Wood, in her Spanish dress, claimed the second prize of the night, while Maud Gaskill's Spanish dancer costume was a sight to behold. Ida Marshall, dressed as a great-grandmother, won the first prize, her timeless costume a reminder of the rich history and traditions of the time. The Princes Skating Club, a social hub for the upper class and aristocracy, played host to many such events, providing a much-needed respite from the daily rigors of life. The Fancy Dress Ball of 1901 was a night to remember, with its enchanting costumes, lively music, and the joyous spirit of camaraderie that brought everyone together.
