Eleanor of Austria, the second wife of King Francis I of France, is depicted in this exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving by Georges Jacques Gatine. The image is based on an illustration by Louis Marie Lante from the "Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres," published in Paris in 1827. Eleanor, born in 1498 as Isabella of Castile and Aragon, was the daughter of Philip the Handsome of Habsburg Spain and Juana of Castile. She became the second wife of Francis I of France in 1514, following the death of his first wife, Claude de France. In this portrait, Eleanor is shown wearing a Spanish net cap, a fashionable headpiece of the time, with her hair parted in the center and plaited over the ears in oreillettes. Her dress is a stunning brocade, open at the front to reveal a petticoat beneath. The sleeves of the dress are slashed and trimmed with ermine, adding to the opulence of the ensemble. Eleanor's jewels are also on full display, including a necklace, earrings, and a ring. Eleanor's marriage to Francis I was a politically significant one, as it strengthened the ties between France and Spain. The union produced two children, including the future King Henry II of France. However, Eleanor died in 1558, just a few years after Francis I, leaving a lasting impact on French history and culture.
