1. Title: "A Triumvirate of Marine Wonders: Common Stingray, Thornback Ray, and Clubnose Guitarfish" This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Dequevauviller after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre for Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825, showcases three remarkable marine species: the Common Stingray (Dasyatis pastinaca), Thornback Ray (Raja clavata), and Clubnose Guitarfish (Glaucostegus thouin). The Common Stingray, with its distinctive fan-like pectoral fins and long, whip-like tail, is a well-known inhabitant of shallow coastal waters. Its underside is adorned with a series of five gill slits, while its upper surface is covered in small, diamond-shaped plates. The barbed tail is a potent defense mechanism, capable of delivering a painful sting. The Thornback Ray, also known as the Spotted Ray, is characterized by its brownish-gray coloration and numerous small thorns covering its back. Its pectoral fins are broad and triangular, allowing it to move gracefully along the ocean floor. The Thornback Ray is a bottom-dwelling species, feeding primarily on crustaceans and mollusks. The Clubnose Guitarfish, with its elongated snout and guitar-like body shape, is a unique and intriguing marine creature. It possesses a long, slender body, covered in small, diamond-shaped scales. The Clubnose Guitarfish is a deep-water species, inhabiting the continental shelf and slope. Its diet consists mainly of cephalopods, crustaceans, and small fish. This exquisite engraving not only showcases the beauty and diversity of these marine species but also serves as a testament to the intricate artistry and scientific precision of the time.
