EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking handcoloured lithograph from the Napoleonic era, the Chief Herald of Arms is depicted in his grand regalia, a testament to the rich history and tradition of heraldry in France. The Chief Herald, also known as the Chef des Herauts d'Armes, was the highest-ranking herald in the French monarchy's heraldic service. He was responsible for the supervision and regulation of all heraldic matters, including the granting of new coats of arms and the maintenance of the royal archives. The Chief Herald is shown here wearing the distinctive uniform of his office. He wears a long, red cotte, or tunic, with gold trim and a white surcoat emblazoned with the fleur-de-lis, the symbol of the French monarchy. Over his shoulders, he bears a large, golden eagle, the emblem of his rank, with outstretched wings. In his right hand, he holds a long, ornate staff topped with a golden ball and a plume of white ostrich feathers. In his left hand, he holds a baton, also adorned with gold and white plumes. On his head, he wears a tall, conical toque, also trimmed with gold and white, and topped with a white plume. This image, created by the renowned French artist Leopold Massard for the publication "Costumes Historiques de la France" in 1852, provides a fascinating glimpse into the opulent world of the Napoleonic Court and the important role played by the Chief Herald of Arms in the administration of the monarchy. The intricate details of the herald's uniform and the vibrant colours of the lithograph serve to highlight the grandeur and majesty of this historical figure and the rich tradition of heraldry in France.
