1674 Aurantium Icones Oranges Paulo Plantarum
EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting illustration, titled "Malum Aurantium: Duo Genera" or "Two Types of the Orange Tree" is an exquisite example of natural history art from the 17th century. Created by the talented Italian botanical illustrator Paulo Boccone, this illustration is taken from his seminal work "Icones et descriptiones rariorum plantarum Siciliae, Melitae, Galliae et Italiae," published in 1674. The illustration showcases two distinct varieties of the orange tree (Citrus x sinensis), a fruit that has long been celebrated for its juicy and vibrant citrus flavor. The first orange tree on the left is adorned with fruit that exhibit a bright orange hue and smooth, thin skin. These oranges are commonly known as the Valencia or Navel orange, and they are characterized by their seedless nature and thin rind. The second orange tree on the right bears fruit that are smaller in size and exhibit a rougher, textured skin. These oranges, known as the Sanguinelli or Blood oranges, are renowned for their deep red flesh, which results from the presence of anthocyanins, a type of pigment that gives them their distinctive color. Boccone's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate rendering of the orange trees' foliage, the delicate veining on the fruit, and the precise labeling of each variety. This illustration not only serves as a testament to Boccone's artistic prowess, but also to the rich botanical diversity that existed in Europe during the 17th century. The orange trees depicted here continue to be cultivated and cherished for their delicious fruit and aesthetic appeal, making this illustration a timeless treasure in the annals of natural history.
