EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic moment when the Ex-French Air Force Avro Lancaster VII, WU15 (G-ASXX), formerly known as NX611, was reunited with an Avro Vulcan, XM605, at RAF Butterworth in North Malaya in the late 1970s. The Lancaster, a iconic symbol of the Second World War, had been acquired by the Historic Aircraft Preservation Society (HAPS) following its service with the French Air Force. The Vulcan, a Cold War-era bomber, was also a significant part of the Royal Air Force's (RAF) history. The Lancaster, with its distinctive silhouette and the distinctive curragh brown camouflage paint scheme, sits proudly next to the sleek and modern Vulcan, a stark contrast in design and era. The rugged North Malayan terrain and the clear blue sky serve as a perfect backdrop to the scene. A group of people, dressed in casual attire, can be seen in the foreground, gazing at the Lancaster in awe, some with cameras in hand, capturing the moment for posterity. The long coastline and the tranquil waters of the nearby body of water add to the serene atmosphere of the scene. The Lancaster, which later became the gate guardian at RAF Scampton, has since been restored to a taxiable condition and is now a proud exhibit at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre in East Kirby, Republic of Ireland, County Donegal. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of these iconic aircraft and the passion of those who preserve them for future generations.
