EDITORS COMMENTS
Grand Voyages," titled "Americae tertia pars: memorabile provinciae Brasiliae historiam contines," published in 1592. The image depicts a naval battle between Portuguese and French forces off the coast of Buttugar, in the Potiguara territory of northeastern Brazil. The scene is based on the first voyage of Hans Staden to Brazil, which took place between 1547 and 1548. Theodor de Bry was a Flemish artist and publisher who is known for his detailed and accurate depictions of the New World. This engraving showcases the intensity and violence of the colonial conflicts between European powers in the Americas. The Portuguese, represented by the galleon in the foreground, engage the French, depicted by the smaller vessel in the background, in a fierce battle. The Potiguara people, who inhabited the region, are shown observing the conflict from the shore. The image is a testament to the complex and dynamic nature of colonial encounters in the early modern period. It highlights the military and political tensions between European powers, as well as their interactions with indigenous populations. The engraving is part of the rich historical record of the colonial era and provides valuable insights into the exploration and settlement of the Americas."
