EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken circa 1900, showcases an African elephant providing a memorable experience for a group of people at a French zoo. African elephants, belonging to the genus Loxodonta, are the larger of the two extant elephant species native to the African continent. The name Loxodonta comes from the Greek words "loxo" meaning oblique sided and "donta" meaning tooth. The African elephant is the largest living terrestrial animal, with males reaching up to 11 feet in height and weighing up to 14,000 pounds. In contrast, the smaller African forest elephant, also part of the Loxodonta genus, can grow up to 8 feet in height and weigh up to 7,000 pounds. Fossil remains of Loxodonta have been discovered in Africa, dating back to the middle Pliocene era. The African elephant's large ears, long trunk, and tusks are distinctive features that make them a popular attraction at zoos around the world. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the connection between people and these magnificent creatures. The African elephant's gentle demeanor and intelligence make it a beloved animal, and this image serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving these animals in their natural habitats for future generations to enjoy.
