EDITORS COMMENTS
Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest religious monument in the world, is located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This photograph, taken in the 1910s, offers a rare glimpse into the interior of this architectural marvel. The central section of the galleries on the second floor/level is visible, adorned with intricate carvings and intricate bas-reliefs that depict Hindu and Buddhist mythology. The library, located near the sub-basement of the third floor/level, is also partially visible in the background. Angkor Wat was originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu for the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, but gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century. The temple complex covers an area of over 400 acres and is surrounded by a moat and extensive landscaped gardens. The galleries and libraries of Angkor Wat are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship and intricate decoration. The walls are covered with over 2,000 meters of bas-reliefs, which depict scenes from Hindu epics, such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The library, located in the central sanctuary, was used as a repository for sacred texts and other important documents. This photograph provides a unique insight into the rich history and cultural significance of Angkor Wat, which continues to attract visitors from around the world. The temple complex is a testament to the architectural and artistic achievements of the ancient Khmer civilization and is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, archaeology, and culture.
