EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures a significant moment in aviation history at Wright Flights in Fort Myer, Virginia, in July 1909. Orville Wright is seen piloting the Flyer, with spectators gathered around in awe. Among the distinguished crowd are notable figures such as Secretary of State Philander C. Knox (third from left), Secretary of the Navy Charles Francis Adams Nagle (fourth from left), and Alice Lee Roosevelt Longworth (second from right). Alice Longworth, a prominent American socialite and journalist, was the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt. The Wright brothers had been offered a $25,000 contract by the U.S. War Department if their Flyer reached a speed of 40 miles per hour. In this image, the Flyer appears to have exceeded expectations, as evidenced by the excited reactions of the onlookers. The photograph was taken by Harris & Ewing, a renowned photographic studio based in Washington D.C. The studio, founded by George W. Harris and Martha Ewing, was known for its high-quality glass negatives and became a leading supplier of images to the U.S. Congressional Library.
