Western Partys camp on December 28 below a hanging glacier at the Cathedral rocks, 1909

Western Partys camp on December 28 below a hanging glacier at the Cathedral rocks, 1909. Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Western Party's camp beneath a majestic hanging glacier at the Cathedral Rocks in 1909. The image is a testament to the extraordinary achievements of Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton, who led three expeditions to the Antarctic. During his second expedition from 1907 to 1909, Shackleton and his companions made history by reaching the Farthest South latitude at an impressive 88° S, coming within a mere 97 geographical miles of the elusive South Pole. In addition to this remarkable feat, members of Shackleton's team also conquered Mount Erebus, one of Antarctica's most active volcanoes. These accomplishments earned him knighthood from King Edward VII as recognition for his exceptional contributions to exploration. Tragically, Shackleton met his untimely demise during his third and final oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition at just 47 years old. However, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of his indomitable spirit and unwavering determination in pushing boundaries. The illustration featured here is taken from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I authored by E. H. Shackleton himself in collaboration with William Heinemann publishers in London in 1909. This historical document provides invaluable insights into Shackleton's groundbreaking adventures that continue to inspire generations fascinated by polar exploration.
