EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th century print depicts Vrindavan Gosain, a prominent figure in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism. The image, believed to have been created in the 1720s, captures the enigmatic guru in a full-length portrait, dressed in traditional South Asian attire. The gosain wears a simple white dhoti, a long piece of cloth wrapped around his waist and legs, and a coat with intricate designs, typical of the clothing worn during this era. His beard, styled in a full and bushy manner, frames his face, which is turned away from the viewer, adding an air of mystery and introspection. Vrindavan Gosain is shown in a cross-legged posture, a common pose for meditation and prayer. He holds a rosary or jama in his right hand, a symbol of his devotion to Vaishnavism, the branch of Hinduism that reveres the god Vishnu and his various incarnations. The painting is executed in opaque watercolor on paper, a technique commonly used in the Indian subcontinent during this period. The exact location and creator of this beautiful artwork are unknown, but it is believed to have originated from either Uttar Pradesh or Himachal Pradesh in northern India. Today, this precious piece of Asian art is housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world.
