EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a testament to the esteemed reputation of Thomas Quested Finnis and his wife, who were Alderman and Lady Mayoress of London during the years 1856-57. The image captures the presentation of a magnificent silver testimonial to the Finnis couple on Wednesday, 1858. The testimonial consists of two exquisite candelabra, standing nearly three feet high and capable of holding twelve wax-lights. The bases of the candelabra are adorned with six female figures, each symbolizing different virtues. Justice is depicted with a sword and balance, Law with an open book, Civic Dignity with the mace and insignia of office, Charity with a group of three figures, Sympathy with an open purse, and the City of London with its arms and shield. Rich scrolls with vine-leaves and pendent grapes hang over the figures. The bases bear the arms of the family and an inscription that reads, "Presented, 1858, to Thomas Quested Finnis, Esq. Alderman, and Mrs. Finnis, Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of London in the year 1856-57, by their friends and fellow-citizens, as a tribute of respect for their excellence in all the relations of life, especially in works of benevolence and charity, and as a record of the high sense entertained of the dignity, urbanity, and liberality with which they discharged their high and distinguished office." The candelabra weigh approximately 700 ounces and cost between £400 and £500. They were meticulously crafted by the skilled hands of Mr. Metcalf Hopgood, a renowned silversmith based in Bishopsgate-street. The testament to the Finnis couple's exceptional character and dedication to their role as Alderman and Lady Mayoress is a beautiful reminder of the respect and admiration they earned from their fellow citizens during their tenure.
