Start of Western Party from Cape Royds, c1908, (1909)

Start of Western Party from Cape Royds, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the start of a Western Party from Cape Royds in c1908, during Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton's second Antarctic expedition. Shackleton, a renowned adventurer, led his team to establish a new record for Farthest South latitude at 88° S, coming within only 97 geographical miles of the elusive South Pole. This remarkable achievement marked the largest advance towards the pole in exploration history. In addition to this feat, members of Shackleton's team also conquered Mount Erebus, an active volcano in Antarctica. The image showcases a group of men standing beside their sledges and dogsleds against a backdrop of pristine snow-covered landscapes. These brave explorers were embarking on an arduous journey through treacherous conditions as they ventured further into uncharted territories. Ernest Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for his extraordinary accomplishments during these expeditions. However, tragedy struck during his third and final oceanographic and sub-Antarctic expedition when he passed away at the age of 47. This historical illustration is taken from "The Heart of the Antarctic" by E. H. Shackleton himself and provides us with a glimpse into the daring spirit and resilience exhibited by these early pioneers of exploration. It serves as a testament to human determination in conquering nature's harshest environments while pushing boundaries that were once thought impossible to surpass.
