St Paul. Plate 10. From: Christ and the Apostles, 1545. Creator: Lambert Suavius
St Paul. Plate 10. From: Christ and the Apostles, 1545. St Paul is looking to his left, and holds a tablet in his left hand and a scroll in his right - probably a reference to his authorship of the Biblical Letters of St Paul. His left foot rests on a rock. His garments are somewhat knotted, and his beard is long and scruffy. On the bottom right (by his left leg) is a shield which bears an image of a word, an allusion to St Paul's martyrdom

EDITORS COMMENTS
Standing strong in his faith, St Paul gazes thoughtfully to his left as he holds a tablet and scroll in this striking engraving from Christ and the Apostles (1545). Created by renowned artist Lambert Suavius, Plate 10 of this iconic work showcases the apostle's rugged yet introspective demeanor. The folds of his garments are expertly rendered, while his long beard adds to his wise and venerable appearance. A shield bearing an image at bottom right serves as a poignant reminder of St Paul's martyrdom. This powerful portrait not only captures the essence of this influential figure but also reflects the artistic mastery of Suavius' era. As part of Christ and the Apostles, it is a testament to the enduring legacy of Christian art in 16th-century Europe.
