Sketches at the Oxford and Cambridge Boat-Race, 1876. Creator: C.R
Sketches at the Oxford and Cambridge Boat-Race, 1876. Annual rowing race on the River Thames in London. The Crews Returning; Off Chiswick Eyot; Clearing the Course. Each crew is nearly three stone heavier than those of last year, and we remark that in the Oxford boat the stroke side is more than two stone heavier than the bow; while the Cambridge men are pretty equally balanced. Last season stroke and bow side in the Oxford boat were within 7 lb. of each other, while there was a great preponderance of weight on the stroke side in the "light blue" ship...The "aquatic tournament, " as the race is absurdly termed, was duly contested last Saturday, and...the best men won. The weather was supremely brilliant, the attendance was phenomenally large, and the entire affair seemed to have been as sparkling a performance as in days gone by...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating engraving by C.R, showcasing the annual rowing tradition between the universities of Oxford and Cambridge on the River Thames in London. The image depicts the crews returning to Chiswick Eyot, clearing the course after the intense and highly anticipated race. The caption from "Illustrated London News" reveals that each crew was significantly heavier than the previous year, with Oxford's stroke side weighing over two stones more than the bow, while Cambridge's men were more evenly balanced. The "aquatic tournament," as the race was referred to, drew an enormous crowd, with the best men emerging as the victors. The weather was described as "supremely brilliant," and the attendance was "phenomenally large," making for a sparkling performance that harkened back to days gone by. The print captures the excitement and tradition of the event, with spectators, both male and female, gathered along the riverbank to witness the race. The scene is further enhanced by the presence of swans and other waterbirds, adding to the picturesque setting. A paddle steamer is also visible in the background, providing transport for spectators and contributing to the bustling water transport scene. This engraving is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat-Race, a cherished British tradition that continues to draw large crowds to the banks of the River Thames. The image is a beautiful representation of the rich history and tradition surrounding this annual event.
