Sir William Molesworth, Bart. M. P. 1845. Creator: Unknown
Sir William Molesworth, Bart. M.P. 1845. Portrait of British politician Sir William Molesworth, 8th Baronet....the successful candidate for the [London] Borough of Southwark in the recent election...one of an old and wealthy Cornish family. Molesworth paid f £ 6000 for a reprint of the entire writings of the philosopher Thomas Hobbes, which were placed in many English university and provincial libraries: The great objection urged against him by his opponents in the present contest is the fact of his having edited an edition of the Works of Hobbes, of Malmesbury, a speculative philosopher, defunct about a century, and one of those celebrated English authors whom everybody has heard of and nobody has read. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Sir William Molesworth, a prominent British politician from the 19th century. Elected as the successful candidate for the Borough of Southwark in London, Molesworth belonged to an esteemed Cornish family known for their wealth and influence. Intriguingly, this portrait showcases Molesworth gesturing with his hand, perhaps symbolizing his strong conviction and determination in political matters. The image is a testament to his charisma and leadership qualities that propelled him to success. Notably, Sir William Molesworth was renowned for his intellectual pursuits as well. He invested a substantial sum of £6000 to reprint the complete works of Thomas Hobbes, a famous philosopher whose ideas were placed in various English universities and provincial libraries. However, this endeavor faced criticism during his election campaign from opponents who questioned its relevance due to Hobbes' speculative nature and relative obscurity among readers. Published in "Illustrated London News" in 1845, this engraving provides us with a glimpse into Victorian politics and society. It serves as a reminder of an era when newspapers played a crucial role in shaping public opinion about politicians like Sir William Molesworth. The photographer behind this remarkable image remains unknown but has successfully captured both the dignified presence of Sir William Molesworth and the historical significance he held within British politics during that time period.
