EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir John French: Commandant en Chef de l'Armee Britannique (Commander-in-Chief of the British Army), 1914 This evocative portrait captures the stern and resolute visage of Field Marshal Sir John Denton Pinkstone French, 1st Earl of Ypres, as he assumed the role of Commander-in-Chief of the British Army at the onset of the First World War in 1914. The image is taken from 'L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume I' published by L'Illustration, Paris, in 1924. Born on January 1, 1852, French joined the British Army in 1870, serving with distinction in various campaigns, including the Sudan and the Second Boer War. When war broke out in 1914, he was appointed to lead the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) to the Western Front. French's tenure as commander was marked by both successes and setbacks. He oversaw the initial repulse of the German advance in the Battle of the Marne, but his strategy for the subsequent Battle of the Aisne resulted in heavy casualties and a stalemate. Despite these challenges, French remained committed to the war effort and continued to lead the BEF until he was replaced in December 1915. In this portrait, French is depicted in full military regalia, wearing the uniform of a field marshal, complete with orders and decorations. His piercing gaze and determined expression convey a sense of resolve and leadership, reflecting the gravity of the situation he faced as the commander of the British forces during the early days of the First World War. The identity of the photographer remains unknown, adding to the mystery and intrigue surrounding this powerful and evocative image.
