Sir John French, c1914, (1919). Portrait of British soldier John Denton Pinkstone French, 1st Earl of Ypres. Field Marshal French (1852-1925) served during the Boer Wars, and was first Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force for the first two years of World War I before serving as Commander-in-Chief of Home Forces. In 1918 Lord French became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a position he held throughout much of the Irish War of Independence.
