EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from the renowned stage production of "The Cricket on the Hearth" at the Lyceum Theatre in 1845. Adapted from Mr. Charles Dickens's beloved Christmas book by Mr. Albert Smith, this theatrical masterpiece left the audience in awe and brimming with enthusiasm. As the curtain fell, an outpouring of applause filled the theater, reflecting the exceptional talent showcased by an extraordinary cast. The leading roles were flawlessly portrayed by esteemed actors such as Mr. Emery as John Peerybingle, Mr. Meadows as Tacklelon (the toy merchant), and Mrs. Keeley as Dot. Notably, Miss Mary Keeley made her debut appearance on any stage portraying Bertha, while Miss Turner brought charm to her role as Tilly Slowboy. Other notable performances included Mrs. Wooledge as Mrs. Fielding and Miss Dawson enchantingly bringing life to the Fairy Cricket. The fervor of the audience was so overwhelming that they demanded appearances from both Mr. Dickens and Mr. Albert Smith themselves after witnessing this remarkable spectacle unfold before their eyes. Although it is unfortunate that Mr. Dickens was not present at that momentous occasion, his collaborator graciously acknowledged their appreciation from a private box. Preserved through time in this exquisite photo print, we are reminded of a truly magical evening where literature came alive on stage at London's Lyceum Theatre over a century ago.
