EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Charles A. Buchel depicts a chilling scene from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's renowned opera, Don Giovanni, first performed in Prague in 1787. Based on Molière's text, the opera tells the story of Don Giovanni, a man of insatiable desires who invites the stone statue of the Commandatore to join his banquet as a joke, having previously killed him when he attempted to defend his daughter Donna Anna's honor. The image captures the moment of terror as the Commandatore's statue comes to life, its stern expression etched in stone. The full moon casts an eerie glow over the scene, adding to the supernatural atmosphere. The ghostly figure, dressed in 18th-century attire, stands tall and imposing, his presence enough to frighten even the bravest of men. The concept of inviting a ghost to a feast may seem like a jest, but the fear on the faces of the men at the table speaks volumes. The color palette of the print is muted, with the predominantly dark tones adding to the ominous feeling. The solar system and astronomy, which were popular subjects during the 18th century, are subtly incorporated into the background, with the moon taking center stage. Buchel's masterful use of color and concept creates a haunting image that transports us back to the 18th century, where the line between reality and superstition was often blurred. This print is a testament to the enduring power of Mozart's opera, which continues to captivate audiences with its tale of desire, retribution, and the supernatural.
