EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "The Scaffolding and Observatory on St. Pauls in 1848" takes us back to a significant moment in London's history. Created by an unknown artist in 1897, the image showcases an observation post constructed by officers of the Royal Engineers atop the iconic cross on St. Paul's Cathedral. During this period, triangulation measurements were carried out from this vantage point to produce a new map of London. This map played a crucial role in planning vital improvements to drainage and sewage systems throughout the city, aiming to combat devastating cholera epidemics that had plagued the capital. Taken from Walter Thornbury's publication "Old and New London" this remarkable photograph offers a glimpse into both the architectural marvel of St. Paul's Cathedral and its practical significance for public health initiatives during the nineteenth century. The monochrome composition evokes a sense of nostalgia as it transports us back to Victorian Britain—a time when religion intertwined with scientific progress. The scaffolding surrounding the cathedral symbolizes not only physical construction but also metaphorical growth and transformation within society. As we admire this historic print, let us appreciate how advancements in cartography, measurement techniques, and engineering have shaped our cities over time—reminding us that even seemingly unrelated fields can come together for monumental societal change.
