Royal Academy Exhibition - No. 16 - "Samson Betrayed", painted by F. R. Pickersgill, A.R.A. 1850. Mr. Pickersgill...has found his subject in Scripture, and has sought to embody the betrayal of Samson by Delilah: "And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head - Judges, xvi. 19'. According to the Bible, the Nazirite Samson was given immense strength to aid him against his enemies. His lover Delilah betrays him by ordering a servant to cut his hair while he is sleeping. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Royal Academy Exhibition - No. 16 - Samson Betrayed," showcases the renowned painting by Frederick Richard Pickersgill, A.R.A., created in 1850. The image was meticulously engraved by George Dalziel for the Illustrated London News. The biblical narrative depicted in this masterpiece revolves around the betrayal of Samson by Delilah. Samson, a Nazirite and a man of immense strength, was given divine power to aid him against his enemies. However, Delilah, his lover, deceived him by ordering a servant to shave off his seven locks of hair while he slept. With his strength gone, she then surrendered him to the Philistines. In this print, we see Samson, naked and asleep, with Delilah kneeling beside him. A soldier, standing guard, holds a pair of scissors, ready to carry out her treacherous plan. The scene is filled with a sense of betrayal and tension, as the strong and powerful Samson lies defenseless. This print, a testament to the Victorian era, is a stunning example of the intricacy and detail that could be achieved through engraving. It is a powerful visual representation of the Old Testament story, and a testament to the artistic skill of both Pickersgill and Dalziel.
