The Race for the Grand Prix de Paris, at Longchamps, on the 5th June, 1864. Creator: Unknown
The Race for the Grand Prix de Paris, at Longchamps, on the 5th June, 1864. '...owing to the inferiority of the animals ultimately left on the card, the "International" was reduced to a match between England and France...It may be said without exaggeration that one hundred thousand "elegant" people were present at Longchamps; the arrival and departure of the brilliant equipages as they emerged from or drove towards the Bois de Boulogne was itself a most delightful sight...the general expectation was that Blair Athol would achieve an easy victory; and near the finish, when Challoner made his too-long deferred effort to win, the general cry was "Le vert! Le vert!" but, notwithstanding the betting and the almost foregone conclusion, the "green" was obliged to succumb to a fresher though not a better horse...It would, however, be unfair to depreciate the victory of Vermouth, who has proved himself...to be a first-rate animal, worthy of the honours he has carried off and of the very natural applause with which his triumph was greeted by the...French people. They were thus recompensed for their defeat of last year, which they bore, let it be here emphatically remarked, with "exemplary" politeness and good feeling'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

A Thrilling Finish - The Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamps, June 5th, 1864
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the excitement and drama of a historic horse racing event - the Grand Prix de Paris held at Longchamps on June 5th, 1864. As described in "Illustrated London News", this prestigious competition saw England's Blair Athol heavily favored to win against France's Vermouth. However, as Challoner made his move near the finish line, a collective cry of "Le vert! Le vert!" erupted from the crowd - only for Vermouth to defy expectations and emerge victorious.
The scene is set amidst a sea of elegant onlookers, with their fine carriages and horses streaming in or out of the Bois de Boulogne. The atmosphere was electric, with an estimated 100,000 people gathered at Longchamps that day. Despite Blair Athol's strong performance, Vermouth proved himself to be a worthy champion - earning the admiration of both French fans and international onlookers.
This rare print offers a unique glimpse into the world of horse racing in mid-19th century Europe, where national pride was often at stake. The image is not only a testament to the skill and athleticism of these magnificent animals but also reflects the social status quo of an era marked by grandeur and refinement.
