Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at the Railway Station at Edinburgh, 1850. Creator: Ebenezer Landells
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at the Railway Station at Edinburgh, 1850....crowds of people assembled, half uttered cheers were heard, the steam was shut off, and...the train was brought to at a private station close to the Queen's-park, and erected expressly for her Majesty's accommodation on her way to Holyrood...The landing platform at the station was covered with crimson cloth. Immediately in the centre is the vestibule leading to the spacious flight of steps by which her Majesty was conducted to the Royal carriage in waiting on the Abbeyhill-road, close by Parsons-green. The vestibule was roofed by an elegant timber canopy, finished in front to resemble festoons of drapery. The roof was finished in the style of an Arabian tent, by graceful festoons of white and pink drapery. The steps, which were divided into two series, were laid with crimson cloth from end to end...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Ebenezer Landells in 1850, captures a historic moment in the lives of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at Edinburgh's Railway Station. The image shows the royal couple stepping out of the train, surrounded by a sea of curious onlookers. The excitement in the air is palpable as crowds of people assembled, half-uttered cheers were heard, and the steam was shut off. The train was brought to a private station close to the Queen's-park, and erected expressly for her Majesty's accommodation on her way to Holyrood. The landing platform at the station was a sight to behold, with the vestibule leading to the spacious flight of steps by which Queen Victoria was conducted to the Royal carriage in waiting on the Abbeyhill-road, close by Parsons-green. The vestibule was a marvel of design, roofed by an elegant timber canopy, finished in front to resemble festoons of drapery. The roof was finished in the style of an Arabian tent, with graceful festoons of white and pink drapery adding to its exotic charm. The steps, which were divided into two series, were laid with crimson cloth from end to end, adding a regal touch to the scene. The Queen and Prince Albert's visit to Scotland was a significant event in their reign, and this photograph offers a glimpse into the grandeur and spectacle of their arrival. The image is a testament to the advancements in transportation and the lengths to which the British monarchy went to ensure their subjects were entertained and delighted by their presence.
