The Prince of Wales's Animals from India, 1876. Creator: J. G
The Prince of Wales's Animals from India, 1876. Thaars; an incident on the road; Musk Deer; Wild Cat...Jung Pershad and Sepa Kali...two elephants, from Nepaul...are attended by two Indian mahouts and a boy, whose...dusky red complexion and unknown speech, catch the attention of visitors to the gardens. Two of the regular keepers employed by the Zoological Society were at Portsmouth...when the [HMS] Serapis arrived...They accompanied the larger pair of elephants from Portsmouth to London, travelling along the high road. In this journey, as may well be supposed, the appearance of those fine young monsters, must have excited some astonishment among the country people...a commercial travelling agent in his gig was beaten in a race he had rashly challenged, in the confidence that he could do a better pace with the one-horse vehicle than that of the elephants'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'The Prince of Wales' Animals from India' by J.G, was published in the Illustrated London News in 1876. The image showcases a collection of fascinating creatures brought from India to England, including Thaars, an Indian antelope, Musk Deer, a Wild Cat, and two elephants from Nepal. The elephants, with their massive size and power, are attended by two Indian mahouts and a boy. The boy's dusky red complexion and unknown speech intrigued visitors to the gardens. The two elephants were transported from Portsmouth to London aboard the HMS Serapis, accompanied by two keepers employed by the Zoological Society. The journey along the high road would have undoubtedly caused quite a stir among the country people, with the elephants easily outpacing horse-drawn vehicles. An amusing anecdote from this journey involves a commercial travelling agent who was beaten in a race he had rashly challenged against the elephants. The photograph, which is engraved and dates back to the nineteenth century, offers a glimpse into the past when exotic animals were brought from far-off lands to entertain and educate the British public. The image is a testament to the fascination and curiosity that animals have held for humanity throughout history.
