EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Prince Rupert, a remarkable figure of the 17th century. Taken from a series of cigarette cards entitled Celebrities of British History, this particular image was produced by Carreas Ltd in 1935. The portrait depicts Prince Rupert of the Rhine, who possessed an extraordinary range of talents and accomplishments. Prince Rupert hailed from German nobility as the younger son of Frederick V, Elector Palatine, and Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of James I of England. As such, he was not only the nephew but also a cousin to two English monarchs - Charles I and Charles II. This familial connection led to his titles as Duke of Cumberland and Earl of Holderness bestowed upon him by King Charles I. Beyond his royal lineage, Prince Rupert's diverse pursuits were truly awe-inspiring. He excelled as a soldier, admiral, scientist, sportsman, colonial governor, and even dabbled in amateur artistry. His multifaceted nature is beautifully captured in this photograph. The image itself radiates regality with its vibrant colors and striking composition. It is believed to be based on a painting by Sir Peter Lely - renowned for his portraits during the 17th century. Prince Rupert's noble features are accentuated by his aristocratic attire. This print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and historical artifact that allows us to glimpse into the life and legacy of one exceptional individual: Prince Rupert – a man whose impact spanned across nations and centuries.
