The New Lion-House, Zoological Society's Gardens, 1876. Creator: Unknown
The New Lion-House, Zoological Society's Gardens, [London], 1876....large new building...for the more commodious lodging of the grand species of feline carnivorous animals...The interior is very airy and roomy, promising to afford the visitors to these gardens, in case of a shower of rain, such an agreeable sheltered promenade...[there is] ample room for twice the number of spectators that used to assemble at feeding-time below the terrace. There are fourteen compartments for the beasts, very much larger than they occupied before, generally about twice as large, besides a back parlour, or "growlery, " for each of them...The collection at present includes a good many tigers, large and small...several Indian and African leopards, with a jaguar and pumas from America; and some lions, which do not appear this winter to be in strong health'.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases The New Lion-House at the Zoological Society's Gardens in London, built in 1876. The large new building was erected to provide more commodious lodgings for the grand species of feline carnivorous animals. The interior of the Lion-House is both airy and roomy, offering visitors an agreeable sheltered promenade in case of rain. With ample room for twice the number of spectators compared to previous feeding times below the terrace, the Lion-House accommodated an increasing number of visitors eager to witness the majestic felines up close. The Lion-House boasted fourteen compartments for the beasts, which were much larger than their previous quarters, with a back parlour or "growlery" for each. At the time, the collection included a variety of tigers, both large and small, several Indian and African leopards, a jaguar, and pumas from America. The lion collection, however, did not seem to be in the best of health during the winter of 1876. This photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1876, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and evolution of the Zoological Society's Gardens and their commitment to providing better living conditions for their animal inhabitants. The Lion-House remains an iconic structure, symbolizing the advancements in animal welfare and conservation efforts during the Victorian era.
