Moose-hunting in Canada - en route for the Hunting Ground, 1858. Creator: Unknown
Moose-hunting in Canada - en route for the Hunting Ground, 1858....a couple of habitans snugly ensconced in a rude sleigh drawn by a pony, on their way to the hunting-ground, the snow-shoes and iron pot suspended behind suggesting visions of hard tramping and good feasting... The favourite months for hunting the moose are March and September, although numbers of them are killed during all the autumnal and winter months...When the snow is soft...[the moose] sweep through it without difficulty, and at such times it is difficult to keep up with them... Though not all orthodox, there are five methods by which the moose is killed in the several British-American provinces: by creeping upon them in the autumn and winter; "calling" the bull moose, in the autumn, when he is wild, fierce, and roving; running them down on snow-shoes, in February and March; bringing them to bay with dogs; and by the mean practice of snaring'. Moose Hunting in Canada - A Journey to the Hunting Ground, 1858
EDITORS COMMENTS
captures a moment in time as two intrepid hunters make their way through the snowy wilderness of Canada, en route to the moose hunting grounds. The image features a couple of habitans cozily ensconced in a rough-hewn sleigh, pulled by a sturdy pony. The snowshoes and iron pot suspended behind the sleigh hint at the arduous journey ahead, evoking visions of long hours of trudging through the snow and the promise of hearty meals to come. Moose hunting was a popular pastime in Canada during the late 1800s, with March and September being the favored months for this large-game hunt. However, moose could be hunted throughout the autumnal and winter months as well. During the winter months when the snow was soft, the moose would effortlessly glide through it, making it challenging for hunters to keep up. The methods of moose hunting varied across the British-American provinces. While some hunters would creep upon them in the autumn and winter, others would "call" the bull moose during the autumn when they were wild, fierce, and roaming. Still, others would run them down on snowshoes in February and March or bring them to bay with dogs. The least orthodox method involved snaring the moose. This image, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1858, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era when the pursuit of the mighty moose was a cherished tradition in the Canadian wilderness.
