Meeting of the Worcestershire Archery Society in the Grounds of Lea Castle, Wolverley... 1858. Creator: Unknown
Meeting of the Worcestershire Archery Society in the Grounds of Lea Castle, Wolverley, near Kidderminster, 1858. Women shooting with bow and arrow. The targets, six pair in number, were pitched near the Castle. There were four pairs for members and two for visitors; and as the shooting proceeded it was watched with much interest by large numbers of the principal inhabitants of the district. Unfortunately, during the afternoon, rain fell twice, obliging the shooters to take shelter for about half an hour each time, but this delay only appeared to give additional zeal, and the sport recommenced again in right good earnest...At the conclusion, dancing commenced in the handsome tent, and was indulged in with much spirit until past dusk'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1858, depicts a meeting of the Worcestershire Archery Society in the picturesque grounds of Lea Castle, Wolverley. The scene is filled with the excitement and enthusiasm of the participants as they engage in the ancient sport of archery. The targets, set up in pairs, were placed near the castle, with four pairs reserved for members and two for visitors. The event attracted a large crowd of onlookers from the local community, who watched with great interest as the archers took aim and released their arrows. Despite the occasional interruption from rain showers, the archers remained undeterred, taking shelter only briefly before resuming their competition with renewed determination. The day concluded with a lively dancing session in the grand tent, where both men and women participated with much spirit, well into the evening. The photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, revealing the fashionable attire of the time, with women wearing voluminous crinolines and men donning top hats and tailcoats. The scene is further enhanced by the presence of the castle and the elegant marquee, adding an air of grandeur and sophistication to the event. This photograph is a testament to the enduring appeal of archery and the spirit of community that surrounded such gatherings in the 19th century.
