EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Lieutenant-General JDP French, the commanding officer of the Cavalry Division in the South Africa Field Force during 1902. The artist, C Knight, beautifully captures French's authoritative presence and military prowess in this portrait. John Denton Pinkstone French, born in 1852 and later promoted to Field Marshal, played a significant role in British military history. He commanded the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) at the outbreak of World War I but was relieved of his command in September 1915. Despite this setback, he went on to oversee the suppression of Ireland's Easter Rising in 1916 and was eventually honored with the title Earl of Ypres in 1922. The portrait is part of "Celebrities of the Army" a publication by George Newnes from London in 1902. It highlights French's distinguished career as a cavalry officer and his contributions to Britain's military forces throughout different periods. The image portrays an iconic figure from both the Boer War era (1899-1902) and World War I. With its vibrant colors and attention to detail, it serves as a reminder of France's significant role within British military history during these turbulent times. This print not only commemorates Lieutenant-General JDP French but also encapsulates an important period for both Britain and its armed forces.
