Lichfield "Greenhill Bower" - Sergeants at Mace, Sword Bearer, Crier, 1850. Annual tradition: This very ancient festival was celebrated...with more than its usual ceremonies. The origin of it was a "Court of Arrray or View of Men and Arms, " in existence long anterior to the Charter of Incorporation of the City, which had its first establishment in the reign of King Edward the Second, in the year 1387, so that the festival cannot be less than 500 years old! In the olden times, processions were made by the public officers of the city, and the dezeners (constables) of each ward bore tutelary saints, for which are now substituted posies, or emblems of their trade'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled "Lichfield Greenhill Bower - Sergeants at Mace, Sword Bearer, Crier, 1850," showcases an intriguing moment from an ancient British tradition. The image, which is believed to have been published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, captures the sergeants at mace, sword bearer, and town crier during the Lichfield Greenhill Bower festival in Staffordshire, England. The Lichfield Greenhill Bower was an annual event with a rich history dating back to at least the 14th century. Originally, the festival was a Court of Array or View of Men and Arms, established during the reign of King Edward II in 1387. Over the centuries, the celebration evolved, and the public officers of the city began to lead processions, bearing emblems of their trades instead of tutelary saints. In this photograph, we see the sergeants proudly displaying their maces, the sword bearer holding aloft his weapon, and the town crier dressed in traditional Victorian attire, complete with a tricorn hat. The men exude a sense of pride and tradition as they participate in this ancient ceremony. The image, which is both engraved and printed, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when such traditions were an integral part of British life. The photograph is a testament to the enduring nature of tradition and the importance of preserving the past for future generations.
