The late J. F. Herring, animal painter, 1865. Creator: Unknown
The late J. F. Herring, animal painter, 1865. '...as regards racehorse and purely farmyard subjects, Mr. Herring was unrivalled...[He was] of Americo-Dutch extraction...[and] taught himself drawing by stealth in his bedroom, after the family were gone to bed...[He] received many commissions for coaching pictures, one of which brought in 50 gs., and he had also commenced, with Filho da Puta, that series of St. Leger winners, which soon led him to fame...For three or four years [towards the end of his life] he had been a great sufferer from asthma and dropsy, and nothing but the most indomitable love of his profession enabled him to paint on. Although he had turned seventy, his skill suffered no decline as far as horse drawing and painting went'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865

This striking photograph captures the artist in all his glory, sporting impressive mutton chops and a bushy beard that adds to his rugged charm. Born into an Americo-Dutch family, Herring's passion for art was nurtured in secret as he taught himself drawing by stealth after bedtime hours.
As one of Britain's most celebrated animal painters, Herring's work spanned from coaching pictures to farmyard subjects, earning him widespread acclaim and a reputation that preceded him. His series on St. Leger winners brought him fame, but it was his unwavering dedication to his craft that allowed him to continue painting despite the physical challenges he faced towards the end of his life.
This poignant portrait, published in The Illustrated London News in 1865, serves as a testament to Herring's enduring legacy and artistic prowess. Despite being over seventy years old at the time of this photograph, his skill remained unimpaired, leaving behind a lasting impact on the world of art.
