EDITORS COMMENTS
Great image capturing a significant moment in American history, featuring three pioneering women: Julia Clifford Lathrop, Jane Addams, and Mary Eliza McDowell, in 1913. This photograph, taken by Harris & Ewing, showcases the trio in full length, dressed in elegant attire, standing together in a room filled with natural light. Julia Lathrop (1858-1932) was a prominent social worker and the first chief of the United States Children's Bureau. Her tireless efforts led to the improvement of child labor laws, the establishment of the Sheppard-Towner Maternity and Infancy Protection Act, and the creation of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Jane Addams (1860-1935) was a social reformer, peace activist, and the founder of Hull-House in Chicago. She was the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 for her work in social welfare and international peace. Mary Eliza McDowell (1867-1961) was an author, educator, and suffragist. She was a prominent figure in the women's suffrage movement and served as the president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association from 1915 to 1916. These remarkable women, united by their passion for social justice and reform, are depicted here in a powerful and inspiring image that encapsulates the spirit of activism and progress during the early 1900s in America. The photograph is part of the Harris & Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress.
